Focus Sessions

The “Silver Jubilee” will include a number of focus sessions whose purpose is to critically review the progress over the last 25 years, and identify open questions and future directions. Each focus sessions will begin with an overview lecture, given by a top leader of the field, summarizing the development of the session's topic, pointing out the main successes, and possibly also failures, and giving a personal future outlook. Some of the sessions will end with an open panel discussion, led by the session chair – also a world expert in the focus of the session.

List of Focus Sessions:

Structure of quasicrystals – Do we know where the atoms are?
Metallurgy – Phases, growth, and stability.
Quasiperiodic Tilings – Is the theory complete?
Electron Microscopy – In memory of Kehsin Kuo (1923 – 2006).
Applications – Complex metallic alloys, the heritage of quasicrystals.
Diffraction – Do we know what a crystal is? Can we solve the phase problem?
Surfaces – What can we learn, now that we can see them?
Transport & physical properties – Why is the conductivity so poor?
Dynamics – Do we understand the role of phasons?
